Dec 23, Colombo: The management of Lanka Sathosa has decided to award bonuses to its permanent employees. The award ceremony was held today (23) under the patronage of Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena at the Lanka Sathosa head office.

Lanka Sathosa, which has been incurring continuous losses for many years, has been able to record profits minimizing losses this year, enabling it to provide bonuses to all permanent employees, the Minister said.

The Minister commended all the staff members for their contribution in reviving the institute incurring losses for many years and making it profitable.

The Minister also stated that necessary steps have been taken to prevent any fraud, corruption or irregularities.

Minister Gunawardena noted that the state-owned retail network has incurred a loss of Rs. 1.9 billion in 2015, Rs. 5.1 billion loss in 2016, Rs. 2.7 billion loss in 2017, Rs. 2.8 billion in 2018.

The loss was minimized to Rs. 1.3 billion last year and this year it has been reduced to Rs. 800 million with the handing over of the island-wide distribution of essential goods to the CWE during the Covid epidemic.

He said the Employees’ Bonus Allowance was made possible on the basis of the profits made this year through the service rendered by the Lanka Sathosa outlet network and its staff to the people of this country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Management has been able to record an operating profit for the past three months. Accordingly, after informing the Cabinet, it was decided to pay a bonus of Rs. 30,000 each to the permanent employees.
