President assures support for Late MP Amarakirthi Athukorala’s family

Sept 06, Colombo: The wife and two children of former Polonnaruwa District Member of Parliament Amarakirthi Athukorala, who died during the violence on May 09 in Nittambuwa area, met President Ranil Wickramasinghe at the President’s Office yesterday (05).

Expressing his deep regret over the incident, the President has told the family to inform him if they need any help including the education of the children, President’s Media Division said.

President Wickramasinghe said that he is ready to provide any help under the grants from the government on behalf of the late MP or personally for the future of the children and the welfare of the family.

The President, who inquired about their well-being, also made a financial donation for Mr. Amarakirthi Athukorala’s personal security officer, Police Sergeant Jayantha Gunawardena, who died, trying to protect the Parliamentarian during the May 9 violence in Nittambuwa.

Police Sergeant Jayantha Gunawardena was posthumously awarded the ‘Presidential Police Valor Medal’ by President Wickremesinghe during the 153rd-anniversary celebration of the Sri Lanka Police held last Saturday, September 3.
