July 19, Colombo: The “National Sandun Uyana”, the country’s first-ever, state-funded national sandalwood garden constructed in Sri Jayewardenepura, Battaramulla will be vested with the public tomorrow (20) at 6.00 pm under the patronage of the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing said.

This National Sandalwood Garden marks one of the milestones in the process of identifying areas to be developed in the country and creating green zones with infrastructure facilities.

Despite the severe restrictions imposed on the country by the Covid-19 disease that has engulfed the world in the recent past, the construction of this nationally important Sandalwood Garden commenced on July 20, 2020 under the concept of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The success of the Green Concept is exemplified by the fact that 9 acres of land belonging to the Urban Development Authority is being used for the benefit of the people without any profit.

The National Sandalwood Garden consists of 300 rare and valuable red sandalwood plants and 900 white sandalwood plants. A special feature of this garden is that the sandalwood plants are planted in a bed of about 2 feet above the ground level for more protection.

Also, Mugunuwenna seedlings, which retain water in the soil, are planted as support plants for the sandalwood seedlings to help in retaining the required water for the sandalwood seedlings.

In addition to the sandalwood trees, many ornamental plants of various colored flowers have also been planted here.

This national sandalwood garden is the first state sponsored garden in Sri Lanka after the state sponsored gardens were built during the king’s day, according to the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing.
