Quarries cheat Government out of revenue 

The latest audit report from the National Audit Office shows that the Government has lost revenue of over Rs. 551,305,626 in the 11 years from 2009 to 2020 through quarries not being levied the proper fees and the excavated material not being properly accounted for. 

The audit report reveals that this shortfall is from 97 quarries in the Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Kurunegala districts. 

The breakdown is as follows:
Rs. 198,898,250 from 12 quarries from Hambantota district, Rs. 81,278, 190 from 27 quarries in Vavuniya district and the rest from 46 quarries in Anuradhapura district and 12 quarries from Kurunegala district.
