The Mattala International Airport and the Ratmalana Airport are in danger of being closed down due to the severe financial crisis.
‘Lankadeepa’ reported that a spokesman for the Ministry of Ports and Aviation had said that the continuation of these airports was a major problem due to the economic crisis, difficulties in maintenance and the low volume of aircrafts arriving at these airports.
The report further states that a large amount has to be spent on maintaining the staff of both airports.
According to the sources, a luxury bus carrying staff from the Katunayake Airport to Mattala travels daily and this is costing a huge sum.
Meanwhile, even the Ratmalana Airport remains an isolated airport at present, according to its staff members.
Ratmalana International Airport was ceremonially opened on March 27 and the Maldivian national carrier that arrived for the maiden voyage on that day returned empty without any passengers.
It is also reported that a sum of Rs. 8 million had been spent on the opening ceremony of the Ratmalana Airport.
