Several decisions made over lunch sheet ban

The Ministry of Environment has reached several decisions pertaining to the ban on production, distribution and sale of non-biodegradable lunch sheets from 1st of August.

These include increasing the production, distribution and sales fine of polythene lunch sheets from Rs.10,000 to Rs.100,000, granting a grace period of one-month to polythene lunch sheet production companies and granting consent for new companies to produce biodegradable lunch sheets.

The Ministry said eight companies produce biodegradable lunch sheets at present, whose representatives, the subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera held extensive discussions yesterday.

The Minister instructed the Central Environmental Authority to submit a report to the Cabinet of Ministers on the difficulties faced by the companies concerned.

Furthermore, it was also decided to revoke the licenses issued to companies that claim to manufacture biodegradable lunch sheets while in reality producing polythene lunch sheets.
