According to a latest report released by the World Food Programme last week, 2022 will be the year with lowest rice production in Sri Lanka after the severe drought in 2017.
Therefore, the report said that this year’s rice production has decreased to 3 million metric tons.
The report has emphasized that the government’s recent ban on the import of chemical fertilizers is the main reason that affected rice production.
The report further said that 6.3 million people in Sri Lanka are facing an acute food shortage as a result of the ongoing crisis situation.
