Dec 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka Armed Forces have played a vast role in ensuring national security as well as nation building over the past two years, Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne said.

Addressing a virtual media conference yesterday (15) at the Presidential Media Centre moderated by President’s Spokesman Kingsly Rathnayaka under the theme “Activity of the Armed Forces over the past two years” the Defense Secretary said today, the country’s national security has been secured and there is no room for separatism. He added that no Sri Lankan should have undue fear.

General Gunaratne also said that the state intelligence and other intelligence services are operating as a strong single network today.

“The freedom that war heroes won by sacrificing their lives and the national security of the country were turned upside down with the Easter attack,” he said.

The Secretary of Defense said that the investigations were not carried out properly during the previous regime and that the judiciary would provide all necessary assistance to bring justice to the innocent families affected by the Easter Sunday attack.

Answering a question on whether the country is being militarized, Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne said the holding of government posts by a few retired army officers is by no means militarization and asked how it would be wrong to use his years of knowledge and experience to serve the country and the people.

It is the responsibility of the Armed Forces to ensure the national security of the country as well as to take the necessary steps to build the nation. The Defense Secretary pointed out that the Army, Navy and Air Force are playing a major role in this regard.

Explaining the role of the Sri Lanka Army in the development of the country during the past two years, Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne, Media Director at the Army Headquarters said that the strength of the Sri Lanka Army was committed to the maximum for the development of the country.

He said the Army Commander has been instrumental in maintaining treatment centers, quarantine centers and intermediate treatment centers as well as the vaccination program and has also been instrumental in developing the infrastructure to meet the needs of the people.

Capt. Indika de Silva, Media Director, Naval Headquarters, said as an island nation Sri Lanka Navy also has a major role to play. He said the Sri Lanka Navy had seized more than 35 billion rupees worth of narcotics in the last two years alone, making it a great service to the country and the future of the youth as the nation’s first defense ring.

At the same time, the Civil Engineering Division of the Sri Lanka Navy has been making extensive contributions to the construction sector. It is also committed to the welfare of the people and has implemented several projects to provide clean drinking water to the people.

Capt. Indika de Silva said that the Sri Lanka Navy is working to ensure the security of the Coastal Ecological Zone as well as to protect the mangroves by cultivating mangroves. He added that Sri Lanka Navy is also actively involved in the control of Covid 19 and vaccination.

Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe, Media Director of Sri Lanka Air Force Headquarters speaking at the media conference said the Air Force was involved in disinfection with the spread of Covid 19.

The Sri Lanka Air Force is actively participating in environmental conservation projects including aerial seeding for protected areas to enhance afforestation in Sri Lanka as stated in the “Vision of Prosperity” policy statement as well as in a joint project with the Sri Lanka Police to reduce urban traffic congestion, Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe said.
