Aug 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) in a letter has informed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa that the Covid epidemic in the Western Province is escalating to a high risk level.

The SLMA has stated in its letter that there is a rapid escalation of the COVID-19 epidemic, particularly in the Western Province that has reached an extremely serious point now, with all intensive care beds and COVID-wards in hospitals being fully occupied by COVID-19 patients, and there being no medical facilities available to many seriously ill COVID-19 patients.

The SLMA further states that he health workers who are at the frontline of defense are themselves becoming victims of Covid-19 and Patients with other disease conditions, some requiring urgent life-saving measures are being deprived of treatment because the health system is overwhelmed with the COVID-19 response.

“Sri Lanka is on the cusp of a major COVID-19 epidemic, even worse than any previous experiences with this virus,” the SLMA warned.

The association points out that it will take only a short period of time for the Delta variant, which is both highly transmissible, causes a more severe morbidity and higher mortality, to spread from the Western Province to other less affected parts of the country.

The SLMA says the spread of the virus can be minimized only by minimizing public gatherings, wearing proper face masks, cleaning hands with disinfectant and keeping away from social events.

“The lifting of the restrictions on travel between provinces, and gatherings of people such as at social events, entertainment hubs, places of worship, public transport and offices, will greatly worsen the current extremely catastrophic situation that prevails,” the association wrote.

The Sri Lanka Medical Association has written to the President requesting him to urgently take the necessary steps to control the current situation as well as to maintain the functioning of the health sector.
