Sri Lanka President praises Army for protecting democracy

Aug 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickramasinghe said Sri Lanka Army troops who protected the democracy by safeguarding the parliament from the violent people will be praised by the nation.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe made these remarks when he engaged in an observation visit of the Sri Lanka Army Headquarters in Pelawatta this morning.
Addressing the gathering after a welcome note, the President appreciated the timely intervention by the troops at the expense of their own lives.
“Your actions that day preserved the Constitution, Democracy and Sovereignty of the country,” the President said adding that the security forces have protected democracy today just as they eliminated terrorism then.
President Wickramasinghe further said that if violent people had entered the parliament and disabled the legislature then, the situation in the country would have changed completely.
The President also said that he would like to express his gratitude to the members of the security forces who took steps to carry out the operation peacefully without firing at any person.
The President emphasizing that the Tri-Forces fulfil their constitutional responsibility while also ensuring the security of the country, called on the legislators to unite and move forward in order to gain the benefit of the dedication of the Tri-Forces.
The President awarded certificates of appreciation to the members of the security forces who protected the Parliament complex from a violent mob who attempted to take over the parliament complex on July 13.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Public Security Minister Tiran Alles, Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne, Senior Presidential Advisor Sagala Ratnayake, Chief of Defense Staff General Shavendra Silva and senior security officers were present on this occasion.
