Summoning newspaper editors is an irresponsible act of the CID officers – Police Headquarters

Sept 30, Colombo: The Police Headquarters says that an investigation has been launched on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) regarding the officers who had summoned journalists and newspaper editors to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for acting irresponsibly and negligently in a manner that would tarnish the professionalism of the CID.
It was reported that the officers of the CID had recently summoned several journalists, including editors of various media institutions, to come to the department to obtain statements regarding an investigation being conducted by the department.
The Police Headquarters issuing a statement regarding the incident emphasized that the Sri Lanka Police has always respected the right of the public, including journalists, to express their views.
“We apologize to the media including the editors of the newspapers who were inconvenienced by the incident,” the Police Headquarters said adding that the situation is not the normal procedure of the CID.
The Statement further said that the Newspaper editors are not usually called to the CID as their media institutions always support the police whenever assistance is requested.
