Jayantha Samaraweera, then an Opposition Member of Parliament, was arrested by the Police Financial Crimes Division on September 28, 2016, during the last good governance government.
This is regarding misuse of a government vehicle while serving as the Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority.
Jayantha Samaraweera is the Deputy Leader of the National Freedom Front led by Wimal Weerawansa.
When Wimal Weerawansa was the Minister of Housing and Construction, Jayantha Samaraweera had been appointed as the Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority. He was been accused of giving various privileges at the expense of the government to Wimal Weerawansa’s family members and top members of the National Freedom Front.
Jayantha Samaraweera also knew that getting bail for offenses under the Public Property Act would not be an easy task, even though he went to jail for raising a strong ‘anti-India’ speech and making a statement to the media before his arrest. From the moment he went, his party, which had been looking for a way to release Jayantha Samaraweera, finally turned to the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Accordingly, Jayantha Samaraweera was released on bail on October 24, 2016 after reaching an agreement with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe over the phone of a person they knew well. If Mr. Jayantha Samaraweera’s party strongly denies this, we can say from whose phone they called Ranil.
In intervening to grant bail, the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had put a strange condition on Jayantha’s people. “You should keep attacking me, or people will get suspicious.” he had asked.
