Three cabinet ministers take a stand against government’s Yugadanavi power plant agreement with U.S. company

Oct 29, Colombo: Three cabinet ministers held a conference today (29) to protest against the government’s agreement to hand over the shares of the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi power plant to an American company.

Leaders of 11 government-affiliated parties participated in the conference, which was held at the Solis Hall in Pita Kotte under the name ‘People’s Council’ for a pro-people tomorrow.’

This is the first time that leaders of 11 government allied parties have held such a conference. The Yugadanavi Power Plant Agreement is the main topic of today’s conference.

Wimal Weerawansa, Minister of Industries and Leader of the National Freedom Front, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Minister of Water Supply and Leader of the Democratic Left Front, Udaya Gammanpila, Minister of Energy and leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya presided over the conference.

General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, Government Parliamentarians Athuraliye Rathana Thera, Tiran Alles, General Secretary of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party MP Tissa Vitharana and Gevindu Kumaratunga, Leader of the National Congress Former Minister A. L. M. Athaulla, and General Secretary of the Lanka Communist Party Specialist Dr. G. Weerasinghe participated in this conference.

State Minister Jayantha Samaraweera and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Colombo District Parliamentarian Attorney-at-Law Premanath Dolawatta were also present.

Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila said that even if they lose their ministerial portfolios, they will not give up the fight until the agreement that is unfavorable to the country is abolished.

Minister Wimal Weerawansa stated that Yugadanavi LNG The agreement on the power plant was passed in secret, which was not properly discussed by the Cabinet.

He said the cabinet paper was presented by the Minister of Finance without the prior knowledge of other ministers or discussion and got it approved.

Addressing the issue, Minister Weerawansa said their protest is not against the government or against the renewable energy.

“We don’t want to topple this government. Neither do we want to give life to lost opposition politicians. We want to take the government forward according to the people’s mandate and kick the people who turn their back to the People’s Mandate.”

Before the commencement of this conference a meeting was held yesterday between the leaders of these parties and President and the Prime Minister. The party leaders have been instructed to submit suggestions and comments on the Yugadanavi agreement.
