Religious leaders have expressed their displeasure over comments made about the Easter Sunday attack by police officials including DIGs Deshabandu Tennakoon and Nandana Munasinghe.
A team of police officers had visited Mahanayake Theros in Kandy and Anuradhapura recently and stated that an attempt was made to blame the police officers for the Easter Sunday attacks. DIGs Deshabandu Tennakoon and Nandana Munasinghe were among the team of police officers who made the visit and stated that the accusation was because they were Sinhala Buddhists.
In a press release, religious leaders have condemned this statement, saying that it seeks to push the East Sunday attack investigations into a level of racism and religious discrimination”.
Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando, Fr. Jude Krishantha, Parakaduwe Saranankara thero, Beligala Amarasiri thero, Shaik Abdulla Abdul Rahman and Moulavi Mohammed Mujaharrin, Shivashri R. Darshaka Sharma and Vaithishwara are the multi-religious leaders who have signed the press release (link below).
Meanwhile, former public and police officials recommended recently that the Police Commission should investigate the matter as it is a violation of disciplinary conduct.
