Trade unions of the private sector have urged to include themselves in the bodies that take national level decisions on Covid-19.
They had expressed this during a meeting held at the Labour ministry today (29) with Labour minister – Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Speaking at the meeting, the minister said that today’s meeting was held on a proposal made by Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa to seek out views and suggestions of TU leaders before the country was reopened on October 01.
Noting that it is the workers of the private sector that are continuously committing themselves to strengthening the country’s national economy despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the TUs said they vehemently opposed not being included in such gatherings.
Speaking, Joint Secretary of the Free Trade Zones and General Services Employees Union (FTZGSEU) – Anton Marcus said that although views of the private sector should have been sought when formulating health regulations pertaining to the working community, TU leaders have not been called to participate in any national level discussion on Covid-19.
