The online call for applications for the transfer of teachers who have worked in the same national school for more than 10 years will be launched in the next few days, it is reported.
It is said that there will be more than 25,000 national school teacher transfers in the year 2021/2022.
There were no teacher transfers in 2021 due to Covid 19, and it is reported that it will be done this year.
Teacher transfers to national schools are based on a 2007 circular, with about 35,000 transfers between national and provincial schools taking place each year.
According to the teachers’ unions, there are many vacancies for teachers in Sri Lanka, including archeology, mathematics, English, IT and primary education, due to various irregularities in the recruitment and transfers of teachers.
However, the Ministry of Education stated that most of the teacher vacancies are subject and provincial wise and that there is a significant shortage of teachers in Tamil and technical subjects in most schools.
According to the Western Provincial Department of Education, there is a shortage of nearly 1,300 teachers in the Western Province and these exist for all subjects.
The department also stated that there were 3,714 vacancies for teachers in the Southern Province and that the shortage was largely resolved through the appointment of graduate trainees.
