Mobile fishmongers have protested against the decision of the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation to distribute its products through the American company Uber Eats, Sri Lanka Mirror learns.
They point out that this situation will cause great damage to their business.
It is inevitable that based on this decision, fishmongers would also have to become Uber Eats delivery persons.
Under this partnership, customers will be able to purchase fish products through the Uber EATS application from over 40 out of the nearly 100 outlets of the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation island wide.
The first phase will be implemented in the Colombo District and it is said that Ceylon Fisheries Corporation outlets in other districts will also join the program in the future.

Commenting on this, Minister of State Kanchana Wijesekera said, “We believe that we should always strive to provide a better service in line with the changes taking place in the world. We are delighted to be partnering with the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation and Uber Eats in this context against the backdrop of the rapid rise in online food ordering. ”

Meanwhile, a fisheries union leader who did not want to be named told Sri Lanka Mirror that entrepreneurs could not be created in Sri Lanka until a leader like neighboring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is found.
He pointed out that when the Indian Prime Minister was elected, he was approached by an American multinational company, Walmart, with a proposal to build 100 supermarkets in India.
However, he said that PM Modi had refused that offer on the grounds that five thousand local businesses would be affected with one such superstore.
Meanwhile, in his Republic Day address to the nation last year (August 21, 2021), Modi said that his future plan was to turn hawkers into entrepreneurs. Hence, the fisheries union leader said that there was no future for Sri Lanka until leaders with such ideas emerged.

Economic experts also point out that Sri Lanka, which is currently facing a severe dollar deficit, could be at risk of exacerbating the dollar crisis by partnering with foreign companies for services.
