The Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) says that tens of millions of rupees in tax revenue have been lost due to the entry of 1064 vehicles of various values into the country fraudulently as freezer trucks.
These vehicles are said to have been imported in this manner between 2020-2021.
The committee has recently inquired from senior officials of the Department of Motor Traffic in this regard.
According to a report by the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts, the Customs has introduced a new system of notifying the Department of Motor Traffic in writing to register the freezer trucks in their original form at the time of release.
The government took steps to ban the import of motor vehicles from March 2020, in order to mitigate the severe exchange rate pressure on Sri Lanka and protect Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves.
