Renowned newspaper journalist Elmo Gunaratne passed away due to complications of Covid-19 at his residence early this morning (28).
He was 89 years at the time of his death and had an illustrious career that spanned the newspaper industry for over six decades.
Educated at Ananda College Colombo, he began his journalism career at ‘Sinhalaya’ newspaper prior to joining Lake House. He was among those who left Lake House when it was taken over by the Government.
He then became the Chief Deputy Editor of Thailand’s Bangkok Post newspaper. He returned to Sri Lanka in 1978 as the Managing Editor of Times of Ceylon newspaper.
Notably, he was the Editor for Lankadeepa, Sunday Times and the Daily Mirror.
Later on, Gunaratne also served as a senior advisor at several ministries.
Gunaratne was the father of four sons. His eldest son, Damitha Gunaratne passed away yesterday (27) due to a sudden heart attack. He too was a journalist for a short period.
Newspaper Editor Thushara Gunaratne is Elmo Gunaratne’s third son.
