Finance Ministry Secretary S.R. Attygalle said that a method of issuing dollars has been prepared for importers who are waiting to clear essential goods piled up at the Port.
Any importer who needs to clear their goods need to inform the Ministry of Finance, he said.
Meanwhile, reports state that a special discussion was held between importers, exporters and Central Bank Governor – Ajith Nivaard Cabraal over the weekend.
The importers have requested assistance in clearing 1,300 containers with essential food items including sugar.
They have also requested measures to prevent essential goods from being piled up at the port.
Last Friday (24), Prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered all essential goods containers piled up at the port to be cleared.
However, only 500 sugar containers have been cleared, Customs sources say.
Importers who met the PM had said that the government should ensure that US dollars required to import goods were available without any hindrance and that failure to do so would lead to further food shortages and rising prices.
