A debate ensued in Parliament today (07) over the foreign exchange reserves of the state.
Speaking, former PM – Ranil Wickremesinghe charged that although Finance minister – Basil Rajapaksa pledged to reveal details in this regard two weeks ago, he had not done so.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said that details have been revealed to India as well as to the IMF and that this violated privileges.
The former PM said that this was the first time he was witnessing a Budget debate taking place in the absence of the Finance minister.
He also urged to immediately appoint the disciplinary committee so that the opposition would return to parliament.
Meanwhile, minister Johnston Fernando said that the opposition leader – Sajith Premadasa would meet with the Speaker and return to parliament once he learns Mr. Wickremesinghe had returned to parliament.
