Laws will be enacted to completely prohibit employing anyone under 18 years of age, Labour minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
Speaking during a high-level meeting held at the Labour ministry today (27), the minister said that the necessary laws for this would be enacted within a period of three months.
The Legal Draftsman’s Department had already reached the stage of final amendments to the ‘Employment of Women, Young Persons, and Children Act’, the minister directed officials to expedite the process. Under the guidance of the minister, steps have already been taken to increase the minimum age for domestic work to 18 by amending the hazardous list, the Labour ministry adds.
Chairing today’s high-level meeting, the minister stated that several necessary regulations will be brought to protect the rights of domestic workers.
Representatives from the Department of Labour, Attorney General Department, Ministry of Justice, Children and Women Bureau, National Child Protection Authority, International Labour Organisation and UNICEF attended the meeting.
